Events Calendar

There is always an event coming up in Tekapo or the wider Mackenzie area – from mountain biking events, kayaking competitions, ski slaloms, ice hockey tournaments or multi-sport races; to markets and musical performances.  An annual Matariki Mackenzie festival is held each winter to celebrate the start of the Māori New Year.

Tekapo Community Market

REGULAR: Tekapo Saturday Market

Regular local market in the village square, 9am – 1pm first Saturday of the month, and long weekends from September to April.

Art, crafts, local food, beverages and products.

Night Market

REGULAR: Tekapo Street Food Night Market

Every Wednesday 4pm – 7pm in the village square.

Showcasing Tekapo’s amazing ethnic diversity with delicious street food from around the world.

May 24-26 2024: Breathe Tekapo Festival

Tekapo’s inaugural three day wellness festival brings together inspirational wellness leaders, invigorating workshops, and opportunities to relax and refresh amidst the stunning Mackenzie landscape.

Matariki Mackenzie

Mackenzie Marathon

July 20 2024 - Mackenzie Half Marathon

A unique course that is usually not accessible any other time of the year, with a race for everyone: half marathon run or walk, 10 km ‘River Dip’ run or walk, 5.5 km ‘Flat Jack’ or the 2.5 km ‘Hole in one’ family-friendly event.

The Mackenzie Half Marathon is a community run event offering a great race environment and fun for everyone. All finishers will be presented with a beautiful medal and all funds raised go to the Fairlie Lions.

Starlight Conference

Oct 20-23 2024: New Zealand Starlight Conference

Hosted by the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand and the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve board, the conference will feature local and international experts across the range of disciplines involved in light at night and its effects.

The main theme is Dark Skies for All: a Call for Action! 

Merrell Summer Challenge

Jan 31 - Feb 2 2025: Summer Challenge

An exciting new adventure event for women, the Merrell Summer Challenge is designed to cater for the same ability level and adventurous women as the annual Spring Challenge.

Key differences are the season and where the Spring Challenge has rafting, the Summer Challenge will have kayaking and coasteering.

Fun, teamwork, exploration and adventure are the key elements the course design team have in mind when scheming up the event routes.  The inaugural event will be held in stunning Aoraki Mount Cook.

The Mackenzie Race
