Getting To And Around Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is located in the legendary Mackenzie District in the heart of Aotearoa’s South Island, approximately 3 hours drive from Christchurch, Dunedin or Queenstown.  It’s a beautiful journey from any direction, whether driving yourself (see details below) or choosing to relax on public transport.  A number of coach and mini bus services are available from major centres in the South Island: Intercity, Great Sights, Atomic Shuttles &  Cook Connection

Getting around once you have arrived at Lake Tekapo is easy!  Many of the attractions are within walking distance, and most tour operators can pick-up if required. Bike hire is also available and a fantastic way to get around. View and download a Tekapo map here!

Drive south on Highway 1. Turn off at Geraldine and follow Highway 79 through to Fairlie.  Don’t pass by without sampling a world-famous Fairlie Bakehouse Pie!  Turn right on to Highway 8 at Fairlie and carry on another 30 mins to Lake Tekapo.

Drive north along Highway 6 to Cromwell. Take Highway 8a past the Cromwell township, across Lake Dunstan to Highway 8. Turn left on to Highway 8 through Omarama and Twizel to Lake Tekapo.

Drive north along Highway 1 to Pareora River Rd in Saint Andrews. Continue on Pareora River Rd. Take Pareora Gorge Rd to State Highway 8 in Cave. Turn left onto State Highway 8 (signs for Route 8/Fairlie).
